I am sure that you have heard the old saying, “It takes an entire village to raise a child.” It takes many individuals working together to provide good educational opportunities for a child. In Decatur, we are very fortunate to have a great team working together for the benefit of our students. The Decatur Public Schools is a system that has almost 1,200 students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. Each day, our dedicated teachers work with these students in trying to help them in their educational pursuits.
Everyday thirteen or so bus drivers face the elements including rain, snow, fog and ice. The kitchen personnel serve breakfasts, lunches, cook banquet meals and prepare meals for other special occasions. The building secretaries answer phones, keep records, take care of sick children and make sure that all the office functions are running smoothly. Our paraprofessionals help everyday in the classroom, at recess and at lunch. The custodians and buildings and grounds personnel work to keep the rooms and fields in top shape. Our administrative staff keeps the wheels turning and the fire of school improvement burning. In addition, many volunteers provide valuable assistance in many different areas. Most of our volunteers are parents. Without parental support and involvement we can not expect to have a successful, well-rounded school program.
There are many individuals filling many different roles and yet all are essential to the education of Decatur children. I truly am proud of the “Decatur Team” and all they do for our children.
